108 Sun Salutations

Each year I do the new year resolution thing. Some years it sticks and I continue the focus all the way through the year. Other years I realize my idea was completely nuts and there is no way I can sustain the resolution. This year I decided I wanted to bring more yoga into my life. I have been a yogi for years - and when I practice regularly, I feel the deep benefits: calmness, clarity, awareness, and (of course) less aches and pains. The most days I've practiced in a week is four - and I thought that was pretty good - but I can never seem to get myself over the hump into a daily practice. This year, I am committing to at least 5 days of practice. To kick it all off, I did a crazy practice with my yoga community -108 sun salutations on January 1. It's like a yoga marathon. After about 25 sun salutations I thought I was completely insane to think this was a good idea. However, at about 50 sun salutations something shifted, I felt this blanket of calm wrap around me and my brain stopped. Literally all the ideas, thoughts, messages, laundry lists just went away and I was there, present in the moment. Honestly, I don't think I've ever truly had that feeling. Now granted, it was fleeting, lasting only another 5 or 6 more sun salutations, but it was enough to keep me thirsty for more. I finished the practice - doing all 108 Sun Salutations. The next day I felt like I had run a marathon. My old body ached in ways it hasn't in years. The benefit I noticed was a shift in my mental state. I felt more at peace, more in tune with myself and those around me. I have caught the yogi bug! I am committed! May this year be the year that brings you sweet, ah-inspiring resolutions.
